Sun Gets Big Traction in Storage Market
Sun moves ahead of such international competitors as Hitachi Data Systems and Fujitsu and into fifth place on the world chart with $494 million in sales (7 percent of the market). Sun recorded a 29.2 percent year-over-year increase in factory revenue for the second quarter, far outperforming the overall market.
- Sun Microsystems is starting to show some real traction in selling its new Open Storage systems. In IDC's Worldwide Disk Storage Systems Quarterly Tracker released Sept. 5, Sun moved ahead of such international competitors as Hitachi Data Systems and Fujitsu and into fifth place on the world c...

HP, IBM Unveil Blade Servers Optimized for Virtualization
IBM, Hewlett-Packard just happen to make their announcements on the same day. IBM reveals the BladeCenter PN41, the first to support Deep Packet Inspection technology. HP introduces its ProLiant BL495c virtualization blade as the world's first designed to host virtual machines.
- It's rather interesting that both IBM and Hewlett-Packard decided to unveil on the same day, Sept. 2, new virtualization-ready blade servers that have been in development for months. It's reminiscent of NBC and CBS, which often appear to be in cahoots of some kind when Jay Leno and David Let...

Storage infrastructure provider Adaptec is getting back into the ASIC production business with this $41 million acquisition. Aristos Logic makes multiprotocol RAID storage processor boards that are delivered in both software and silicon solutions. Its ASIC development team has produced a scalable architecture that can be used in multiple product families.
- Storage infrastructure provider Adaptec is getting back into the ASIC production business. Adaptec announced Aug. 27 that it is acquiring privately held RAID board maker Aristos Logic for about $41 million in cash. Aristos employs about 75 people and has been supplying a handful of the top 10...

Cisco Buys PostPath to Compete with Microsoft Exchange
UPDATED: Cisco Systems acquired PostPath, a Microsoft Exchange e-mail storage competitor, and heads down the path of a big-time co-opetition to handle enterprise e-mail against a longtime partner, Microsoft. PostPath uses augmented open-source software and an optional appliance that plugs directly into a data center to offer a lower-cost, in-the-cloud e-mail server alternative to Microsoft Exchange. Exchange has long been known as one of the most complicated business software packages that IT personnel handle.
- Cisco Systems is heading into a big-time quot;co-opetition quot; to handle enterprise e-mail against a longtime partner, Microsoft, thanks to the Aug. 27 acquisition of privately held PostPath. Cisco will pay a total of $215 million for PostPath and expects to close the deal in Cisco's first quar...

Solid-State Memory Will Kill HHDs
HHD, or hybrid hard drive, disk storage is a technology that will generally give way to the simpler, more efficient SSD, or solid-state drive, form factor. Want proof? Seagate Technology, Western Digital, Samsung, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Micron Technology, SanDisk and LSI Logic are well into flash development as the next generation of processors begins to take shape. Some companies are working on advanced solid-state technologies such as Spansion and Virident Systems' EcoRAM. NAND flash memory forms the core of the removable USB storage devices known as USB flash drives and the Apple iPod and Apple iPhone. EMC, Dell and Sun Microsystems are among the first systems vendors to come out with optional solid-state drives for servers and storage arrays. Here's why SSD storage will kill HHD storage.
- SSD (solid-state drive) storage will ultimately kill HHD (hybrid hard drive) disk storage. Not everyone will agree. It could take years, perhaps even a full generation, but spinning disk storage will give way to the simpler, more efficient solid-state form factor. Here's why SSD storage will kil...

Panasas High-Performance Storage File System Goes Mainstream
Panasas ActiveStor, with its extremely fast parallel file system, is usually found in scientific data centers like that at Los Alamos National Laboratory. But now the system has been tailored for general enterprise use, with an aggregate bandwidth of twice that of the prior generation. It also uses less power and cooling than older systems.
- Parallel file system storage specialist Panasas, founded by Dr. Garth Gibson of Carnegie Mellon University, the man who co-created RAID back in the '90s, has tailored its ActiveStor product line for enterprise use. ActiveStor, with its extremely fast file system and processing power, is usually ...

Intel Unveils Its First Solid-State SATA Storage Drives
Intel has been putting a great deal of R D into developing flash memory SSDs that will withstand the rigors of 24/7 data center server usage, heavy-duty client/server desktop and laptop use, and embedded applications. Intel is convinced that it has added enough storage capacity up to 160GB on these SSDs to more than handle enterprise duty.
- SAN FRANCISCO Intel has been developing solid-state flash memory processors for as long as flash has been around (20 years). But only on Aug. 19 at the Intel Developer Forum here did the world's largest chip maker announce its first-ever flash-based SATA drives for data storage. Intel's High...
