Coolant Management Sump Maintance Troubleshooting Guide Metal Working Home

Here we have listed the most common problems encountered with machining
coolants along with tips on prevention and corrective action.

Remember that coolants can be sent into our lab for analysis, Coolant Management, a free service for our customers.

PROBLEM CAUSE

SOLUTION & PREVENTION

Foul Odors/smells, "Monday Morning odor & Rotten Egg Smell" Bacterial Growth

Solution: Add NuGenTec BUG-KILL to sump at 1 oz per every 5 gallons in sump.

Prevention: Begin recirculation coolant.  A "rotten egg" smell is caused by anaerobic bacteria which create a sulfur smelling odor.    Air (oxygen) will help prevent this, recirculating the tank after sitting idle alone can go a long way to reduce the odor.  This usually occurs in summer conditions after a sump has been sitting idle for extend periods of time and a layer of tramp oil has covered the surface, effectively sealing the coolant from air.

Slime or slimy films on top of tank or walls Fungal/mold/algae growth

Solution: Add NuGenTec BUG-KILL to sump at 1 to 2 oz per every 5 gallons in sump.

Prevention: keep up on coolant management.

Tramp oil floating on coolant in sump Excessive Hydraulic oils or WAY oils leaking into sump

Solution: Remove oil.

Prevention: Skimmers, Wet-Vacs, Filtration, Coolant purifiers/re-conditioners and fix any leaks that may be present.

Separation of coolant / Splitting / creaming out Improper mixing

pH Drop

Re-mix coolant
add biocide
Add more coolant (check concentration 1st)
RUST/Corrosion Improper concentration Add coolant to correct.
